Selling a Vehicle
Things to Do When Selling a Vehicle.
- Remove your license tags from the vehicle and return them to DC DMV either in person or by mail. If you do not, you may be liable for any traffic violations occurring while your tags remain on the car. Click here for more information on surrendering your tag.
- The buyer will need to visit a DC DMV service center to obtain temporary tags to take the vehicle through inspection once you remove your license tags.
- Provide the new owner with the properly signed title. If the vehicle is being sold to another DC resident or a DC dealership, the existing vehicle inspection sticker is still valid until it expires.
- If you have more than six months remaining on a vehicle registration, and you do not plan to transfer the registration to another vehicle, you may request a refund of the unused portion of the registration from DC DMV. Parking permit and inspection fees cannot be refunded.
