A licensed provisional driver who moves to the District from another
jurisdiction must convert a valid out-of-state provisional
driver license to a DC provisional driver license if they are remaining in DC
for more than 30 days. A DC provisional Drivers
license is valid for one year for US citizens and may vary for
non-US citizens (according to the US immigration expiration date).
Requirements
You must be a resident of DC
You must be clear of all outstanding debts to the District of
Columbia
You must provide the following documents:
- Valid out of state provisional driver license*
- Proof
of Social Security Number
- Proof
of Current Residency
- Proof of Ability to Drive
- Proof of Identity

Steps
- Complete the Drivers
License Application
- Provide the required documents
- Take and pass the vision test
- Take a photograph (DC law and policy requires a full frontal digital photo that shows either the ears or up to the hairline without exposing the hair)
- Pay the appropriate fees
- Surrender your out of state provisional driver license
- Obtain your DC provisional driver license
