A duplicate vehicle title may be obtained to replace a lost or stolen title if you have:
- Your DC title number and vehicle information number (VIN). This information can be found on your registration card.
- Your current name and address on file at the DMV. The DMV will mail your duplicate vehicle title to your current address on file at the DMV.
- A valid credit card. The DMV accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. The DC Government does not accept American Express.
Note that dishonored check and penalty fees must be paid with duplicate title. Tickets payments are optional for duplicate title transactions.
The following vehicle situations are not eligible for online duplicate title request:
- Lienholder on Title
- Lessor as owner
- Recently changed your address or name without updating this information with DMV
If you can't satisfy all of the eligibility requirements above, you must request a duplicate vehicle title at a DMV Service Center. Note that titles are not issued over the counter at DMV; therefore, your title will be mailed to you regardless whether you request it online, by mail or in person.
